History

In 1958 the creation of the Bombay cat began. A breeder named Nikki Horner from America set out to create a cat that resembled the majestic black leopard of India. Her first attempt to create a miniature leopard failed but she managed to achieve success in 1965. The Bombay cat breed was created by crossing a Burmese cat with an American Shorthair. The result was a beautiful black svelte cat. Horner decided to name the breed ‘Bombay’ after the Indian city.

The breed was developed further by Herb and Suzanne Zwecker who created new lines. Bombays were officially recognized as a breed in 1970 by the Cat Fanciers Association and in June 1979 the International Cat Association accepted them for championship competition.

Behaviour

This bombay cat is known to be dog like, in that it can be trained to walk on the lead and play fetch. These cats have larger than life personalities and love to constantly be around their owners. They have a very playful nature and are sociable and inquisitive. If left on their own for long periods of time they may become a bit glum. This breed is a suitable family pet and is very good with children because of their playful and loving nature. They don’t tend to get bored of human company to expect to have your Bombay cat as a shadow.
